Worried about a makeup meltdown? These tips and tricks will keep you looking fresh and pretty from sunrise to sundown, despite the sweltering heat and humidity summer brings.
One of the biggest concerns consumers face amongst the sweaty days of summer – besides greasy skin – is oily eyelids, which cause eye shadow to crease. To keep eye shadow looking flawless and creaseless from morning to night, invest in a good primer. An eye shadow primer should be used before any eye shadow, whether cream or powder, to help shadow stick to lids and keep the color true and vibrant. Try Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $18, and apply all over the lid and up to the crease.
Another trick, either use a cream shadow for all-over color, or use cream shadow before powder to give even better staying power. Even with this technique, still apply a primer beforehand. A good cream shadow to try is Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In Place Shadow Creme, $17.50.
Lips are another area of meltdown concern, whether it’s color fading, creeping into those little lines and wrinkles around the mouth, or getting too sticky. The solution: first, apply concealer to the lips. This will act as a base to help hold lip color all day, plus it will act as a neutralizer so the color on lips is the same as the color in the tube.
If lines and wrinkles are a problem, apply lip liner all the around the lips in a color that closely resembles the lip shade. Next, try a lip stain; using a lip stain will give you color that adheres all day, and will give a pretty, matte finish. Try Laura Mercier’s Lip Stain $20. Or, try a long lasting lipstick such as Armani Rouge D’Armani, $30. If a touch of shimmer is wanted for evening, try layering Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment $22.50 on for a shiny – but not sticky – and moisturizing finish.
Although your nail polish won’t crease or melt, keeping them pretty during the summer is not always easy. First trick of the trade: try a neutral color on fingernails and toes. Try OPIs Coney Island Cotton Candy or Sweet Heart, both $8.50. Using a neutral color will result in less chipping, and when the inevitable chips do appear, they will be less noticeable. Neutral polishes also take less time to dry, so there will not be as much downtime between painting nails and enjoying the sunshine.
One word describes summer hair: frizz. And that frizz is caused by the abundance of humidity present in summer air. To prevent frizz and keep hair looking soft and manageable from the time you leave the house in the morning until bedtime, start with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Frizz occurs when the hair follicles are dry and absorb the moisture in the air, so keeping hair moisturized is the first mode of prevention. Try Redken All Soft to help a blowout last for more than one day, even in the sweaty climate that is summertime; invest in a dry shampoo. Try Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, about $4. Just spray on roots, brush out, and let hair shine. If all else fails, put hair up in a pretty ponytail the next day and add a flirty, thin headband. No on will know it’s second day hair and it will beat the heat all day long. Just spray hairspray to the hair around the crown to prevent little curls from forming in those baby hairs due to the humidity.
The biggest caveat of all in the summertime is greasy skin. To keep skin shine free and prevent makeup meltdown, start with a cleanser that cleans skin but retains moisture balance such as Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel $28. Next, apply an oil-free moisturizer, because keeping skin moisturized prevents excess oil secretion, even in warmer weather.
If you are going to wear makeup, try using a tinted moisturizer instead. This will even out skin tone but will not feel heavy or melt off. If extra coverage is needed, try a mineral powder foundation by itself or on top of a tinted moisturizer. Powder foundations won’t sweat off, and the minerals protect with a natural sunscreen. Try L’Oreal Bare Naturale Mineral Foundation, about $11. If the nose is a complete oil slick try a primer just on that area, which will control oil and minimize the appearance of pores, such as Benefit The POREfessional, $28.
